The Senate of the University of Zagreb, at its session on December 10, 2019, adopted the Decision establishing the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The Decision was made on the basis of a Study on the status change of the University Department of Croatian Studies as a branch of the University of Zagreb to the status of an institution within the University of Zagreb called Faculty of Croatian Studies.

The Decision outlines the mission of the new faculty as a higher education institution and scientific organization  

The Faculty of Croatian Studies at the University of Zagreb is a higher education institution and scientific organisation. Its objective is to research and investigate Croatian society, state, space, population, diaspora, culture, Croatian civilisational and cultural heritage within European and worldwide context, to gives an understanding of existing knowledge and new findings, and to cultivate Croatian national and cultural identity, with special emphasis on issues pertaining to croatology, culture, history, philology, philosophy, sociology, information and communication, demography, diaspora, identity, psychology, palliative care, upbringing and education.

Since 2007, the Faculty of Croatian Studies is located on the University campus of Borongaj, has more than two hundred teachers and external associates and 1395 students in studies of communication studies, croatology, Croatian Latinity, demography and Croatian emigration, history, philosophy and culture, psychology and sociology-

At the same session, the Senate approved the Rector to appoint the Dean and the first onvocation of the Faculty Council. Accordingly, the rector prof. Damir Boras appointed prof. Pavao Barišić the Dean of the Faculty of Croatian Studies at the University of Zagreb as the interim director of the institution, as well as 34 members of the Faculty Council, while six other members of the Faculty Council, student representatives are to be elected by the Student Assembly of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. It is the task of the dean and the Faculty Council, under the supervision of the founder, to make preparations for the commencement of the institution and to prepare general acts.
The new school began as an innovative project of the University of Zagreb called the University Comparative Study of Croatian Philosophy and Society in 1992, and since 1993 it has been called Croatian Studies.

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
